FIREMAN CLASS $2000.00
C&TSRR Steam School Fireman Class will be available to first time students with a strong emphasis on actual “firing” of a K-36 Baldwin locomotive for three and a half days. Classroom textbooks, C & T S rule book and Timetable will be furnished in advance to all students and requirements will include testing of material in the classroom on day one.

Day one begins with registration and includes a welcome luncheon with the entire Steam School Class and staff. The half day of classroom participation will be required, viewing C & TSRR safety videos and reviewing all course materials with qualified instructors. After the classroom session, students will reconvene in the yard with instructors and a locomotive for an afternoon/early evening hands-on training, allowing all participants to become familiar with the antique 1925 Coal Fired, Steam Operated Baldwin K-36 locomotive including the daily service and maintenance needs.

Day two includes becoming familiar with and understanding the art of firing the antique locomotive as instructed by the certified, experienced fireman trainer. Students will practice actual firing of the locomotive with a loaded freight train from Chama, New Mexico to Cumbres Pass and return. Students will rotate in the locomotive, allowing all participants to experience the 4% grade to the summit.

Day three and four test the students’ proficiency and skill with more running time on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. On day three, the student train will travel the entire 64 mile trip from end to end beginning at Chama, New Mexico. The return from Antonito, Colorado will be on day four. Students will rotate in the locomotive.

ENGINEER CLASS $2500.00
C&TSRR Engineer Steam School Class will be available for “returning” students who previously took the Fireman Class. Students will be sent course material in advance, including textbook(s) on How a Steam Locomotive Works and Operates. Emphasis will be on expanded throttle time, brakes, setting valves, injectors, lubricators, lights, and repairs and maintenance, along with specific studies relative to use of the AIR on the locomotive and much more. Homework will be required and testing will take place in the classroom on day one.

Day one begins with registration and includes a welcome luncheon with the entire Steam School Class and staff. The half day of classroom participation will be required, viewing C & TSRR safety videos and reviewing all course materials with qualified instructors. After classroom and lunch, students will reconvene in the yard with instructors and a locomotive for an afternoon/early evening hands-on training allowing all participants to re-familiarize themselves with the antique 1925 Coal Fired, Steam Operated Baldwin K-36 locomotive including performance of the routine daily service and maintenance exercises.

Day two includes the practice, familiarization and understanding of the art of engineering the antique locomotive as instructed by the certified, experienced engineer trainer and running with a loaded freight train from Chama to Cumbres and return twice, allowing all participants to experience the 4% grade to the summit. Students will rotate in the locomotive.

Day three and four test the students’ proficiency and skill with continued engineering time, measuring each student’s progress with more running throttle time on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, traveling the entire 64 miles. Day three begins in Chama and ends in Antonito. The return trip takes place on day four. Students will rotate in the locomotive.

*In order to increase “cab time” for the Fireman and Engineer Steam School Classes, the following significant changes to the program have been made:
- Homework required of all students prior to the opening of each Steam School Class will include successful passing of designated tests given by Steam School Class instructors.
- A full three days of cab time, whether Fireman or Engineer, will be made possible by the process of student rotation.
- Fireman/Engineer Classes will accommodate a maximum of 12 students.
